Dimitar Peshev was the Deputy Speaker of the Bulgarian Parliament during World War II who led the courageous political rebellion that stopped the secret deportation of Bulgaria's entire Jewish population of 48,000 people to Nazi death camps in March 1943. Stripped of his parliamentary office for his defiance, his intervention saved every native Bulgarian Jew from the Holocaust.

Defying strict Swiss federal orders to close the border, Grรผninger falsified entry dates and documents to grant refugees legal status, sacrificing his career, pension, and reputation in poverty before posthumous rehabilitation.
