Biographical Record

Walter Sisulu worked in the gold mines of the Witwatersrand and joined the ANC in 1940. Recognizing the immense leadership potential of a young Nelson Mandela, Sisulu brought him into the movement and co-founded the ANC Youth League with Mandela and Oliver Tambo in 1944.

Elected ANC Secretary-General in 1949, Sisulu was the organizational mastermind behind the 1952 Defiance Campaign and the underground armed wing Umkhonto we Sizwe. Sentenced to life imprisonment at the 1964 Rivonia Trial, he remained Mandela's closest confidant during twenty-six years in prison.
