Giorgio Perlasca was an Italian businessman who, trapped in Budapest during the winter of 1944–1945, posed as the Spanish consul-general to rescue more than 5,200 Hungarian Jews from the Arrow Cross death squads and Nazi extermination camps. He invented safe-conduct passes, hid families in Spanish-protected safe houses, and physically dragged Jews off cattle trains bound for Auschwitz.
