"We will never surrender our mountains; liberty is not a favor begged from the slavemaster, but a sovereignty defended with iron and blood."

Archival Overview

Heroic military commander and last sovereign king of the Quilombo dos Palmares, the legendary free fugitive state of 30,000 Africans, indigenous peoples, and poor whites that resisted Portuguese colonial assaults for nearly a century.

Biographical Record

Zumbi (1655–1695) was captured as an infant and raised by a Catholic priest before escaping back to the Serra da Barriga mountains at age fifteen. Rejecting compromise treaties with the Portuguese crown that would have returned new runaways to slavery, Zumbi was crowned supreme leader (Ganga Zumba) of Palmares in 1678.

For seventeen years, Zumbi marshaled martial arts, iron smelting, and guerrilla ambushes to repel dozens of Portuguese military expeditions. On November 20, 1695, betrayed by a captured comrade, Zumbi fell fighting Bandeirante commander Domingos Jorge Velho. November 20 is celebrated across Brazil as National Black Consciousness Day (Dia da Consciência Negra).
