"You can hang me now, but I am not alone! There are two hundred million of us, and you cannot hang us all!"

Archival Overview

Eighteen-year-old Soviet partisan whose unbreakable defiance under Nazi torture made her the first female Hero of the Soviet Union during World War II.

Biographical Record

Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya was a Moscow schoolgirl who volunteered for behind-the-lines sabotage operations with the Western Front intelligence detachment during the desperate Battle of Moscow in 1941. In November 1941, she was deployed to destroy German military quarters in Petrishchevo.

Captured while carrying out her mission, Zoya was subjected to hours of brutal interrogation and torture in freezing temperatures but refused to disclose her real name or comrades' locations. Led to the gallows at age eighteen, she shouted to the villagers: 'You cannot hang all two hundred million of us!'
