"Let our ships carry our faith across the waves, and let our mosques stand in stone until the Day of Judgment."

Archival Overview

Aghlabid Emir of Ifriqiya (817–838 CE) who launched the historic Muslim conquest of Sicily in 827 CE and rebuilt the magnificent Great Mosque of Kairouan in its enduring stone splendour.

Biographical Record

Ziyadat Allah I (788–838 CE) was the third Aghlabid Emir, confronting severe domestic revolts from Arab military factions (jund) and conservative Maliki scholars in Kairouan led by Asad ibn al-Furat. To channel internal military unrest outward, Ziyadat Allah launched an epic naval invasion of Byzantine Sicily in 827 CE under Asad's command.

The expedition secured Mazara del Vallo and Palermo, beginning two centuries of glorious Islamic civilization in Sicily. At home, Ziyadat Allah demolished the older mud-brick structure of the Great Mosque of Kairouan in 836 CE, rebuilding it with antique marble columns, the world's oldest surviving wooden minbar, and its iconic three-tiered square minaret.
