"Music is the language of the heavens translated into human strings; when the fifth string vibrates, the soul ascends."

Archival Overview

Legendary 9th-century musician and polymath who introduced the fifth string to the oud, founded the world's first music conservatory in Córdoba, created the Andalusian musical tradition (Nawbah), and transformed European courtly culture.

Biographical Record

Abu al-Hasan 'Ali ibn Nafi' (789–857 CE), affectionately nicknamed Ziryab ('Blackbird') for his melodic singing voice and dark complexion, was the brilliant protégé of court musician Ishaq al-Mawsili in Baghdad. Migrating to Moorish Spain in 822, he was welcomed with royal honors by Emir Abd al-Rahman II of Córdoba.

In Córdoba, Ziryab revolutionized music: he added a fifth string to the lute (*oud*), replaced wooden plectrums with eagle quills for superior resonance, and established Europe's first music conservatory. He systematized the classical Andalusian Nawbah suite, which influenced the troubadours and European lute music. Ziryab also revolutionized European gastronomy, fashion, etiquette, and grooming.
