Second President of Tunisia who succeeded Bourguiba in 1987, governing for twenty-three years of rapid macroeconomic modernization until being ousted by the nationwide revolution of January 14, 2011.
Biographical Record
Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was trained at Saint-Cyr and in military intelligence in the United States, rising through the security services to become Minister of the Interior and Prime Minister. On November 7, 1987, he legally deposed the aging President Habib Bourguiba on medical grounds.
His twenty-three-year presidency delivered macroeconomic stability, infrastructure expansion, and security, but was increasingly dominated by authoritarian control and crony corruption. Widespread popular protests ignited in December 2010 culminated in his departure on January 14, 2011, triggering the Arab Spring.
