Algerian revolutionary strategist who succeeded Didouche Mourad as commander of Wilaya II and masterminded the August 20, 1955 North Constantine Offensive that irreversibly transformed the war into a mass popular revolution.
Biographical Record
Zighoud Youcef (1921–1956) was an artisan blacksmith and OS militant who escaped from Annaba prison in 1951. Following Didouche Mourad's death in January 1955, Zighoud assumed leadership of Wilaya II (Constantinois), confronting severe French military blockades and severe civilian isolation.
On August 20, 1955, Zighoud launched broad daylight peasant assaults on twenty-six colonial towns and military installations across Philippeville (Skikda) and Guelma. The offensive broke the colonial blockade, brought the Algerian peasant masses permanently into the liberation struggle, and forced the Algerian question onto the UN General Assembly agenda. He fell in battle a year later.
