Biographical Record
A major in the East Bengal Regiment, Ziaur Rahman (1936–1981) revolted against the Pakistan Army on March 27, 1971, broadcasting the historic declaration of independence on behalf of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from the Kalurghat radio station in Chittagong. He commanded the 'Z Force' brigade in the Liberation War, earning the Bir Uttam medal.
Assuming the presidency in 1977, Zia introduced multi-party democracy, promoted free-market reforms, and proposed the establishment of SAARC to foster South Asian regional cooperation. He was assassinated in Chittagong in an abortive military coup.
