Biographical Record

A former Sichuan warlord brigade commander who renounced opium and wealth to join the Communist Party in Berlin in 1922, Zhu De (1886–1976) led the historic Nanchang Uprising on August 1, 1927. He joined Mao in the Jinggang Mountains, forming the famous 'Zhu-Mao' partnership.

As Commander-in-Chief of the Red Army, Zhu formulated the principles of mobile guerrilla warfare ('The enemy advances, we retreat; the enemy halts, we harass'). He commanded the Eighth Route Army during the war against Japan and the decisive battles of the Civil War, serving as Marshal and Chairman of the National People's Congress.
