Grand Viceroy of Eastern Wu who commanded the allied southern fleet that annihilated Cao Cao's armada at the Battle of Red Cliffs in 208 CE, preserving southern Chinese autonomy.
Biographical Record
Handsome, cultured, and musically gifted (famed for noticing a false musical note even when intoxicated), Zhou Yu (175–210 CE) was the sworn brother of warlord Sun Ce and chief military advisor to Sun Quan. In 208 CE, when Cao Cao marched south with 200,000 troops demanding surrender, Zhou Yu advocated unyielding resistance.
Working with Huang Gai, Zhou Yu orchestrated a false defection and launched fire ships packed with dry reeds and fish oil directly into Cao Cao's chained northern fleet at Red Cliffs (Chibi). The resulting inferno destroyed Cao Cao's armada in one of the most celebrated naval victories in military history. He died of illness at only thirty-five.
