Archival Overview

Fierce and loyal general of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms era, one of the Five Tiger Generals, celebrated for holding off Cao Cao's entire army single-handedly at Changban Bridge.

Biographical Record

Zhang Fei (c. 166–221 CE) joined Liu Bei and Guan Yu in the Peach Garden oath, serving as Liu Bei's fiercest vanguard commander. In 208 CE, during the retreat at the Battle of Changban, Zhang Fei ordered his cavalry to tie tree branches to their horses' tails to kick up dust, while he stood alone on Changban Bridge with his Serpent Spear.

Glaring at Cao Cao's pursuing army of thousands, Zhang Fei roared: 'I am Zhang Yide of Yan! Who dares to step forward and fight me to the death?' Terror-stricken, Cao Cao's troops retreated. Later, he captured the veteran general Yan Yan through clever psychological warfare. He was assassinated by mutinous officers on the eve of the campaign against Wu.
