"The great Way is simple: preserve life, harm no living soul, walk with quiet step upon the earth, and let truth dwell in the inner chamber of your heart."

Archival Overview

First Celestial Master of Daoism who founded the Way of the Celestial Masters (Tianshi Dao). Received divine revelation from Laozi on Mount Heming, establishing community covenants of healing, ethics, and meditation.

Biographical Record

Educated in Confucian classics at the imperial academy in Luoyang, Zhang retired into mountain seclusion in Sichuan to pursue inner alchemy and spiritual transcendence. In 142 CE, he experienced a vision of Taishang Laojun (deified Laozi), commissioning him as the earthly representative of cosmic order.

He organized a network of twenty-four parishes that provided healthcare, moral education, and mutual grain stores, eliminating animal sacrifice in favor of spiritual offerings of incense and purity before ascending from Mount Qingcheng.
