Educated in Confucian classics at the imperial academy in Luoyang, Zhang retired into mountain seclusion in Sichuan to pursue inner alchemy and spiritual transcendence. In 142 CE, he experienced a vision of Taishang Laojun (deified Laozi), commissioning him as the earthly representative of cosmic order.
He organized a network of twenty-four parishes that provided healthcare, moral education, and mutual grain stores, eliminating animal sacrifice in favor of spiritual offerings of incense and purity before ascending from Mount Qingcheng.
