Archival Overview
Legendary 3rd-century Queen of Palmyra who conquered Egypt and the Levant, defying the Roman Empire at the height of its power.
Biographical Record
Septimia Zenobia was the queen of the wealthy desert oasis kingdom of Palmyra in central Syria. Following the assassination of her husband King Odaenathus in 267, she assumed the regency for her son Vaballathus and governed with extraordinary political acumen, surrounding herself with philosophers like Cassius Longinus.
Zenobia launched a stunning military expansion in 270, seizing Roman Egypt, Syria, and large parts of Anatolia to establish an independent Palmyrene Empire. Leading her troops in armor on horseback, she proclaimed full independence from Rome until Emperor Aurelian defeated her forces at Emesa and captured Palmyra in 272, taking her to Rome where she lived in exile.
