Archival Overview

Fifteenth-century Emperor of Ethiopia from the Solomonic Dynasty whose thirty-four-year reign represented the golden age of medieval Ethiopian power, literature, and church organization.

Biographical Record

Zara Yaqob (1399–1468) ascended the imperial throne in 1434 after spending years imprisoned on Mount Gishan by his brother. A devout Christian theologian and statesman, he founded the capital city of Debre Berhan ('City of Light') after witnessing a luminous celestial meteor in 1456.

He crushed the Muslim Adal Sultanate at the Battle of Gomit in 1445, authored theological treatises like 'Meqsefta Berhan' ('Scourge of Light'), reformed monastic rules, and sent an Ethiopian diplomatic delegation to the Council of Florence in 1441, opening direct links with Renaissance Europe.
