Biographical Record

Zakir Husain (1897–1969) earned his doctorate in economics at the University of Berlin in 1926. Returning to India, he dedicated two decades to building Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi into an independent nationalist university without British funding. In 1937, Gandhi selected him to draft the 'Nai Talim' basic education curriculum.

A scholar who translated Plato's Republic into Urdu, Husain served as governor of Bihar and vice president before being elected third President of India in 1967. A passionate lover of roses, he personally landscaped the famous Mughal Gardens at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
