Archival Overview
Syrian philosopher and linguistic theorist who formulated the philosophical and philological foundations of Arab national identity.
Biographical Record
Zaki al-Arsuzi was born in Latakia and grew up in Antioch, studying philosophy at the Sorbonne in Paris between 1927 and 1930. Returning to the Sanjak of Alexandretta, he led the political struggle against its annexation by Turkey before being forced into exile in Damascus in 1938.
Arsuzi formulated a deeply linguistic theory of nationalism, arguing in works like The Genius of Arabic in Its Vocalism that the roots, sounds, and structure of the Arabic language embody an intuitive, metaphysical worldview. His teaching influenced generations of Syrian students and intellectuals who founded the modern nationalist movements.
