Archival Overview
Legendary Ait Atta warrior who refused the 1933 surrender of Bougafer, waging a solitary guerrilla war for three years against French colonial forces in the High Atlas mountains.
Biographical Record
A warrior of the famed Ait Atta tribal confederation, Zaid Ouhmad participated in the epic defense of the Jbel Saghro at the Battle of Bougafer in 1933. Refusing to lay down his arms after the general armistice negotiated by Assou Oubasslam, he took to the peaks with a handful of partisans.
From 1934 to 1936, he conducted daring ambushes against French military convoys and colonial administrative outposts across the Goulmima and Todgha gorges. Surrounded by a full colonial battalion at Tadighoust in March 1936, he died weapon in hand, entering Berber folklore as an immortal free man.
