Biographical Record
Yvonne Vera was born on September 19, 1964, in Bulawayo. Educated at Luveve Secondary School, she completed a BA, MA, and PhD in literature at York University in Toronto, Canada, analyzing indigenous representations of colonial conflict.
Vera was a stylist of extraordinary poetic intensity. Her classic novels—including Nehanda (1993), Without a Name (1994), Under the Tongue (1996), and Butterfly Burning (1998)—tackled taboo subjects of female trauma, infanticide, incest, and war with exquisite, impressionistic language. As director of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo (1997–2003), she turned the gallery into a vibrant center for grassroots sculptors and women artists.
