Archival Overview
Formidable Pasha of Tripoli (1795–1832) who declared the First Barbary War against the United States in 1801, captured the USS Philadelphia frigate, and fortified Tripoli harbor against naval bombardments.
Biographical Record
Seizing the throne of Tripoli in 1795, Yusuf Pasha modernized the naval fortifications and privateering fleet of Tripolitania. In May 1801, demanding increased tribute from the young United States for merchant ship protection, he dramatically chopped down the flagpole of the American consulate, sparking the First Barbary War.
In October 1803, his batteries captured the 36-gun frigate USS *Philadelphia* and its 307 crew in Tripoli harbor. After Commodore Edward Preble's naval bombardments and William Eaton's march on Derna in 1805, he concluded a favorable peace treaty with US envoy Tobias Lear, governing until his abdication in 1832.
