Biographical Record
Yusuf ibn Tashfin (c. 1009–1106 CE) was an ascetic Lamtuna Berber nomad of legendary piety, discipline, and military brilliance. Selected as supreme commander of the Almoravid movement, he conquered the Moroccan plains and Atlantic coastal kingdoms, founding the oasis imperial capital of Marrakech in 1062.
In 1086, answering the desperate plea of Andalusian Muslim princes facing the onslaught of King Alfonso VI of Castile, Tashfin crossed the Straits of Gibraltar. At the Battle of Sagrajas (Al-Zallaqa), his disciplined camel corps and Berber regiments crushed the Castilian knightly army, prolonging Islamic civilization in al-Andalus for four centuries. He assumed the humble title Amir al-Muslimin.
