Archival Overview
Monumental 'Dean of Arab Theater' who studied under Italian master actor Chiantoni, founded the legendary Ramses Theatrical Troupe in 1923, and was granted the rank of Bey by King Farouk for elevating Arabic drama.
Biographical Record
Son of high-ranking irrigation engineer Abdullah Pasha Wahbi, Youssef rebelled against his wealthy aristocratic family, traveling secretly to Italy to study acting under dramatic master Ermete Zacconi. Returning to Cairo in 1923, he inherited his father's fortune and poured it entirely into founding the *Ramses Troupe*.
He constructed the Ramses Theater, staging over 300 dramatic plays and directing Egypt's first synchronized talking motion picture Awlad al-Zawat (Sons of Aristocrats, 1932). His baritone theatrical voice, Shakespearean presence, and passionate social melodramas earned him the title 'Dean of Arab Theater'.
