Archival Overview
Dey of Tunis from 1610 to 1637 who established the permanent administrative boundaries of the Regency of Tunis and built the landmark Youssef Dey Mosque in the Medina.
Biographical Record
Succeeding Uthman Dey, Youssef Dey reigned for nearly three decades of peace and institutional consolidation. In 1628, following military victories against Algerian forces, he fixed the historic western border between Tunisia and Algeria that survives to this day.
In 1616, he constructed the stunning Youssef Dey Mosque—the first Ottoman-style mosque in Tunis, featuring its iconic octagonal minaret—alongside surrounding souks (Souk el Trouk) and public baths that still define the Medina.
