Biographical Record
Jorge Octavio 'Yoryi' Morel was born in Santiago on October 25, 1906. Showing brilliant precocious skill in drawing, Morel held his first solo exhibition in Santo Domingo in 1932, stunning critics with his radiant, loose brushstrokes.
Unlike contemporaries who copied European academic styles, Morel painted the luminous tropical reality of the Cibao: barefoot peasants riding donkeys, joyful rural weddings, village carnivals, and lush royal palms. Founding the Academia de Pintura Yoryi in Santiago, he trained generations of Dominican visual masters.
