"A woman does not exist merely to echo conventional pieties; she must conquer the vast wilderness of her own mind."

Archival Overview

Trailblazing Costa Rican novelist and essayist whose 1948 masterwork 'La ruta de su evasión' introduced stream of consciousness, psychological depth, and biting feminist critique into Central American literature.

Biographical Record

Yolanda Oreamuno was born in San José on April 8, 1916. A fiercely independent intellect, Oreamuno rejected bourgeois traditionalism early in life, publishing provocative essays on women's intellectual emancipation in Joaquín García Monge's Repertorio Americano.

In 1948, she published her magnum opus La ruta de su evasión in Guatemala, winning the 15 de Septiembre Central American Literary Prize. The novel utilized interior monologues, temporal fragmentation, and acute psychological exploration decades ahead of its time. Living in Mexico City, she passed away in 1956 at the age of forty.
