Biographical Record
Born Kassa Mercha in Tigray, Yohannes was crowned Emperor at Axum in 1872. He adopted a federalist approach to imperial governance, reconciling powerful regional rulers like Menelik of Shewa and Tekle Haymanot of Gojjam to ensure united national resistance against foreign partition.
Yohannes achieved decisive military triumphs against Egyptian forces at the Battle of Gundet (1875) and the Battle of Gura (1876), capturing modern artillery and rifles. He consistently resisted Italian encroachments in Eritrea and fell leading 100,000 Ethiopian warriors against Mahdist invaders at the Battle of Gallabat in March 1889.
