Biographical Record

Practicing medicine in Toledo and Córdoba, Halevi stood at the cultural zenith of the Andalusian Golden Age, mastering Arabic poetry and philosophy. Yet he grew disillusioned with speculative rationalism, arguing that historical encounter and religious experience surpass philosophical syllogisms.

In his classic dialogue The Kuzari, structured as debates before the King of the Khazars, he defended faith rooted in living history. In old age, he abandoned his comfort in Spain to journey to Jerusalem, where legend records he was slain by an Arab horseman as he kissed the stones of the holy city.
