Biographical Record
Yasin Pasha al-Hashimi was born in Baghdad and graduated from the Ottoman Military Staff College in Istanbul, rising to major general during World War I. He fought in Palestine and Syria, serving as military governor of Damascus under King Faisal I before returning to Iraq to lead the anti-British nationalist opposition.
Hashimi founded the National Brotherhood Party (Hizb al-Ikha al-Watani) and served twice as Prime Minister (1924-1925 and 1935-1936). A staunch advocate of Arab unity and strong state authority, he enacted universal military conscription and major irrigation projects before the 1936 military coup forced his exile to Damascus, where he died months later.
