Biographical Record
Abu Yusuf Yaqub al-Mansur (1160–1199) ruled the Almohad Empire at the pinnacle of its military, architectural, and cultural power. An intensely religious and charismatic leader, he founded modern Rabat as Ribat al-Fath (The Fortress of Victory), intending to build the world's largest mosque, commemorated by the colossal Hassan Tower.
On July 19, 1195, at the Battle of Alarcos in Castile, Al-Mansur scored one of the most devastating Muslim victories over Christian crusaders in the Middle Ages, capturing King Alfonso VIII's entire camp and treasury. He completed the minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakech and the Giralda in Seville, and established the renowned Maristan of Marrakech, history's most advanced public hospital of its era.
