Archival Overview

Distinguished historian and younger brother of Ibn Khaldun, who served as prime minister and court chronicler of the Zayyanid Kingdom of Tlemcen and authored Bughyat al-Ruwwad.

Biographical Record

Yahya ibn Khaldun shared the elite Andalusian pedigree of his older brother, Abd al-Rahman Ibn Khaldun. Settling in Tlemcen under the patronage of the Zayyanid Sultan Abu Hammu Musa II, he became the kingdom's official historiographer and trusted secretary.

His principal masterpiece, Bughyat al-Ruwwad fi Dhikr al-Muluk min Bani Abd al-Wad, provides the definitive institutional and cultural history of the Abdalwadid state in western Algeria. His brilliant court career was tragically cut short when a jealous rival assassinated him in 1379.
