Archival Overview
The ninth and final Sultan of the Hammadid dynasty, who governed Bejaïa at the peak of its maritime wealth and intellectual patronage before the Almohad unification.
Biographical Record
Yahya ibn al-Aziz ascended the throne of the Hammadid Sultanate in Bejaïa in 1121. His three-decade reign was marked by tremendous cultural opulence, vibrant trade with the Norman Kingdom of Sicily and Genoa, and generous state patronage of astronomers, mathematicians, poets, and theologians who gathered at Bejaïa's famed madrasas.
When the massive Almohad army under Caliph Abd al-Mu'min besieged Bejaïa in 1152, Yahya led a spirited naval and land defense before negotiating a dignified surrender. Treated with immense respect by the Almohad caliph, he retired with royal honors, leaving behind a city whose architectural marvels and scientific academies helped ignite the European mathematical Renaissance through Fibonacci.
