Astute Zenata Berber statesman who founded the Zayyanid Kingdom of Tlemcen in 1236, fortified the Mechouar palace, and defended Algerian regional sovereignty against Marinid and Hafsid rivals for nearly half a century.

Biographical Record

Yaghmurasen ibn Zyan (1206–1283) was the paramount emir of the Zenata Berber Abdelwadid tribe. Taking advantage of the collapse of the Almohad Empire, he established Tlemcen as the sovereign capital of his new Zayyanid Kingdom in 1236, successfully defending his borders against powerful Marinid armies from Fez and Hafsid forces from Tunis.

Yaghmurasen was celebrated for his dry wit, modest Berber pride, and diplomatic pragmatism. When genealogists attempted to invent a prestigious descent from the Prophet Muhammad for him, he famously pointed to his sword and proclaimed in Berber: 'God knows this realm was won by our swords, not by noble pedigrees!' He ruled for forty-seven years.
