Archival Overview
Pioneering Belgian Symbolist painter and master of mystical chiaroscuro whose poetic cycle L'Âme des choses (The Soul of Things) deeply influenced Fernand Khnopff and European Symbolism.
Biographical Record
Son of a gardener at the Royal Palace of Laeken, Mellery studied at the Brussels academy and won the prestigious Belgian Prix de Rome in 1870. Commissioned to illustrate the isolated island of Marken in the Zuiderzee, he captured traditional folk life with solemn spiritual gravity.
In his groundbreaking series L'Âme des choses, Mellery used black chalk and gouache to reveal the silent, mystical presence radiating from mundane domestic interiors—sunlight warming empty stairways, wooden chests, and quiet rooms. He also sculpted the forty-eight bronze guild statues ringing the Square du Petit Sablon in Brussels.
