Biographical Record

Wu Cheng'en (c. 1500–c. 1582) was a Chinese novelist, poet, and scholar of the Ming dynasty, born in Lianshui, Huai'an. Despite exceptional literary talent in calligraphy, painting, and classical poetry, he repeatedly failed the higher imperial examinations, finally securing only a minor county magistracy before retiring to devote his life to writing.

Wu is recognized as the author of Journey to the West (Xiyou Ji), one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. Transforming the historical pilgrimage of Buddhist monk Xuanzang to India into a brilliant mythological adventure, the novel created the immortal character of Sun Wukong (the Monkey King), blending satire of imperial bureaucracy with Buddhist, Daoist, and folk spiritual wisdom.
