Archival Overview

Northern Paiute spiritual prophet who experienced a celestial vision during the total solar eclipse of New Year's Day 1889. Preached the Ghost Dance religion of universal love, non-violence, and spiritual reunion.

Biographical Record

During high fever during the eclipse of 1889, Wovoka was taken up to heaven, where the Creator revealed to him a paradise where ancestors and game lived joyfully. He was instructed to teach indigenous nations a sacred circle dance and a doctrine of strict peace and hard work.

His message spread across hundreds of tribes from the Rockies to the Great Plains, misconstrued by nervous military authorities that led to the tragic Wounded Knee massacre, while Wovoka continued living as a quiet healer in Nevada until his passing in 1932.
