Archival Overview
Dutch football midfielder, tactician, and Total Football stalwart who started in both the 1974 and 1978 FIFA World Cup Finals for the Netherlands, won the 1970 European Cup with Feyenoord, and as Celtic manager signed Henrik Larsson and stopped Rangers' 10-in-a-row.
Biographical Record
Wilhelmus "Wim" Jansen was born in Rotterdam and spent fifteen years with his boyhood club Feyenoord, forming the intelligent midfield heartbeat of the legendary side that won the 1970 European Cup against Celtic in Milan (becoming the first Dutch club to lift the trophy) and the 1974 UEFA Cup. He earned 65 caps for the Dutch national team, starting in midfield alongside Johan Cruyff in the 1974 World Cup Final against West Germany and the 1978 World Cup Final against Argentina.
As a manager, Jansen achieved Celtic folklore status during his single season in Glasgow (1997–1998). Taking over a club in turmoil, he made the inspired £650,000 signing of Swedish striker Henrik Larsson from Feyenoord and guided Celtic to the Scottish Premier Division title, dramatically halting arch-rivals Rangers from achieving an historic tenth consecutive league championship.
