Biographical Record
Hailing from the working-class Seefhoek district of Antwerp, Vandersteen worked as a carpenter and decorator before drawing comics during World War II. In March 1945, he introduced Suske and Wiske, accompanied by the strongman Lambik, Aunt Sidonia, and Jerom.
Invited by Hergé to contribute to Tintin magazine, Vandersteen produced the acclaimed 'Blue Series' albums, including Het Spaanse Spook. In 1959, he founded Studio Vandersteen in Kalmthout, mentoring generations of Flemish artists and establishing the comic strip as a dominant cultural medium.
