Willie Howard Mays Jr. (1931–2024), affectionately known as The Say Hey Kid, was the consummate baseball player: an irrepressible dynamo who excelled in every facet of the game—hitting for average, power, baserunning, throwing, and fielding.
A 24-time All-Star and 12-time Gold Glove winner, Mays crushed 660 home runs and collected 3,293 hits. His over-the-shoulder running catch in Game 1 of the 1954 World Series at the Polo Grounds, simply called The Catch, is widely regarded as the most iconic defensive play in baseball history.
