Duke of Normandy who launched the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, decisively winning the Battle of Hastings. Replaced the Anglo-Saxon aristocracy with Anglo-Norman feudalism, commissioned the Domesday Book, and built the Tower of London.

Illegitimate son of Robert I of Normandy, William consolidated his dukedom amidst brutal baronial wars before claiming the English throne following the death of Edward the Confessor. Crossing the Channel with an invasion armada, he defeated King Harold II on Senlac Hill on October 14, 1066.

Crowned in Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day, he surveyed every acre of land and livestock across England in the extraordinary 1086 Domesday Book, fundamentally transforming the English language, legal architecture, and European geopolitics.
