Biographical Record
William Rowan Hamilton (1805–1865) was appointed Royal Astronomer of Ireland and professor at Trinity College Dublin while still an undergraduate. In optics and dynamics, he unified mechanics using the principle of least action, introducing the Hamiltonian function.
In October 1843, while walking along the Royal Canal in Dublin, he had the sudden inspiration for quaternions—a non-commutative four-dimensional number system—and carved its fundamental formula i² = j² = k² = ijk = -1 into Brougham Bridge. Quaternions today control 3D computer graphics and spacecraft guidance.
