William Lloyd Garrison (1805 – 1879) was a tireless American abolitionist and publisher whose unyielding voice galvanized the radical anti-slavery movement. Born in Massachusetts, Garrison rejected gradual emancipation and colonization schemes, demanding immediate, unconditional freedom and constitutional equality for all enslaved African Americans.

On January 1, 1831, he published the first issue of The Liberator, proclaiming in its legendary manifesto: 'I will not equivocate – I will not excuse – I will not retreat a single inch – AND I WILL BE HEARD.' In 1833, he co-founded the American Anti-Slavery Society. Garrison also allied with the nascent feminist movement, insisting that women participate fully as leaders and speakers within anti-slavery organizations.
