William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley (1520–1598) was an English statesman who was the principal architect of the Elizabethan Golden Age. Educated at St John's College, Cambridge, and Gray's Inn, Cecil was appointed Principal Secretary of State by the young Queen Elizabeth I upon her accession in 1558, with the Queen famously saying: 'This judgment I have of you: that you will not be corrupted by any manner of gift'.

For four decades, first as Secretary of State and from 1572 as Lord High Treasurer, Burghley guided England through immense religious and geopolitical peril. He engineered the 1559 Elizabethan Religious Settlement establishing the Church of England, balanced royal finances, defeated the Northern Rebellion, orchestrated the trial of Mary, Queen of Scots, and prepared the realm to defeat the Spanish Armada in 1588.
