Biographical Record

William Carey (1761–1834 CE) was a self-educated shoemaker who mastered Latin, Greek, Hebrew, and Dutch while working at his cobbler's bench.

Sailing to Serampore, India in 1793, he co-founded Serampore College, compiled the first Bengali-English dictionary, translated the Bible into dozens of Indian dialects, and persuaded Lord Bentinck to ban the burning of widows (Sati).
