Biographical Record
Born in Owen Sound, Bishop attended the Royal Military College before joining the cavalry and transferring to the Royal Flying Corps in 1915. Flying Nieuport 17 and S.E.5a fighters on the Western Front, his aggressive, instinctive shooting made him a deadly aerial combatant.
On June 2, 1917, Bishop carried out a solo pre-dawn attack on a German aerodrome behind enemy lines, shooting down three enemy planes as they scrambled to take off, earning the Victoria Cross. During World War II, he served as Air Marshal directing recruitment for the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan.
