Biographical Record
After spending twenty years in Italy studying painting, architecture, antiquities, and numismatics in Naples and Rome, Cobergher was summoned back to Brussels in 1604 by Archduke Albert and Infanta Isabella as their premier architect and hydraulic engineer.
He designed the landmark seven-sided Baroque pilgrimage Basilica of Our Lady of Scherpenheuvel (1609–1627), the first domed church in the Low Countries. As Superintendent-General of public pawnshops (Monts-de-Piété), he established social credit institutions across Flanders, while his hydraulic genius drained 27,000 acres of coastal marshes in De Moëres.
