Biographical Record
Wayne Shorter (1933–2023) is universally revered alongside John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins as one of the supreme tenor and soprano saxophonists and composers in jazz history. Joining Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in 1959, he served as musical director, contributing foundational hard-bop compositions.
In 1964, Miles Davis recruited Shorter for his legendary Second Great Quintet alongside Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams. Shorter served as the group's primary composer, authoring enigmatic, harmonically revolutionary standards like \"Footprints\", \"Nefertiti\", and \"Infant Eyes\". In 1970, he co-founded the seminal jazz-fusion ensemble Weather Report with Joe Zawinul, releasing the platinum crossover anthem \"Birdland\".
Winning 12 Grammy Awards and the Polar Music Prize, Shorter approached music as a vehicle for Buddhist philosophical exploration, urging musicians to \"play what you cannot hear\".
