Archival Overview
Legendary leader of Belgian secret intelligence who directed the 'Dame Blanche' network in World War I providing 75% of Allied railway intelligence, and founded the 'Clarence' network in World War II.
Biographical Record
A telecommunications engineer and director of the Belgian telephone company in Liège, Dewé founded 'La Dame Blanche' in 1916 following the execution of his cousin Dieudonné Lambrecht. His network of over a thousand agents tracked every German troop train on the Western Front.
In 1940, refusing surrender, Dewé created the 'Clarence' intelligence network for the British SIS (MI6), code-named 'Muriel'. Operating underground for four years, Clarence transmitted over 4,000 radio messages regarding V-1 launch sites and German movements before Dewé was shot dead by Gestapo officers while warning a fellow agent in Ixelles.
