Biographical Record
Walter Frederick "Fritz" Mondale was born in Ceylon, Minnesota, the son of a Methodist minister, and served in the United States Army before earning his law degree. A protégé of Hubert Humphrey, he served as Attorney General of Minnesota and was appointed to the United States Senate in 1964, championing the Civil Rights Act and authoring the landmark Fair Housing Act of 1968.
As Vice President to Jimmy Carter, Mondale redefined the office from a ceremonial afterthought into a substantive, full-time presidential advisory role, establishing the first West Wing office for a vice president. Securing the 1984 Democratic presidential nomination, he made history by choosing US Representative Geraldine Ferraro of New York as his running mate. He later served as United States Ambassador to Japan under Bill Clinton.
