Archival Overview
19th-century Kikuyu sovereign leader who initially signed a blood brotherhood treaty with the British Imperial East Africa Company and later burned Fort Lugard in defense of sovereignty.
Biographical Record
Waiyaki wa Hinga was born around 1845 in southern Kikuyuland. Rising as the paramount military and political leader of the southern Gikuyu, he commanded extensive agricultural estates around Dagoretti.
In 1890, Waiyaki entered into a blood brotherhood treaty with Captain Frederick Lugard of the Imperial British East Africa Company (IBEAC). However, when company troops began looting local food supplies, violating women, and breaking customary laws, Waiyaki led his warriors in burning Lugard's fort to the ground. In August 1892, lured into negotiations at Fort Smith, he wounded colonial commander Purkiss during a struggle. Captured and marched toward the coast, he was murdered and buried alive upside down by British soldiers at Kibwezi.
